Art has always been a powerful medium for conveying complex narratives and evoking deep emotions. Bangladesh Art Week's second Dubai edition presents an exhibition that promises to touch the very core of human experience. Titled Tracing Displacement, this exhibition, in partnership with Bayt AlMamzar, delves into the harrowing realities of forced displacement caused by war, poverty, and environmental factors.
Running from 18th November to 16th December 2023, Tracing Displacement presents a diverse array of artworks by five talented Bangladeshi artists: Mahbubur Rahman, Samsul Alam Helal, Salahuddin Ahmed Paulash, Dinar Sultana Putul, and Mojahid Musa. Curated by the visionary Niharika Momtaz, the exhibition features sculpture, photography, mixed media construction, augmented reality, and film presentations, creating a rich tapestry of visual and sensory experiences.
An Opening to Remember
The grand opening of Tracing Displacement was nothing short of spectacular. Held at Bayt AlMamzar in Dubai, the event was graced by Said Nourine, Director of Alliance Française, as the Guest of Honour. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as art enthusiasts, critics, and guests gathered to witness this significant cultural event.
Exploring the Themes
Tracing Displacement goes beyond conventional artistic expressions to confront and explore the intricate circumstances of displacement. Through a variety of mediums, the exhibition contemplates the disruptive conditions that challenge our perceptions of the built environment. The artists weave stories that confront the historical legacies of invasion and displacement, engaging viewers with static, dynamic, and synthetic images that provoke thought and reflection.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is Assimilated Musing VII by Mojahid Musa, displayed as part of Bangladesh Art Week’s Creative Residency Program called "CONNECTION." Like many others in the exhibition, this piece invites viewers to engage with the personal and collective narratives of displacement.
Voices from the Event
Gaith Abdulla, Founder of Bayt AlMamzar, eloquently expressed the exhibition's significance, stating, “The exhibition Tracing Displacement is a timely reminder of how societies big and small can fail those most vulnerable. We welcome this opportunity to reflect on these collective failures of humanity. At this critical time, as the people of Gaza face an ongoing historic onslaught, we must reflect on what it means to bear witness to tragedy.”
Niharika Momtaz, the driving force behind Bangladesh Art Week, shared her vision: “Tracing Displacement hopes to create engaging spaces that inspire ideas and keep the human story at the center of discussions. The individual stories of some of the millions of people forced to leave their homes due to war, natural disaster, and poverty confront the legacies of invasion and displacement.”
A Prestigious Line-Up
The artists featured in Tracing Displacement are no strangers to the global art scene. Their works have graced prestigious events such as the Venice Art Biennale, Documenta, Sharjah Biennale, Museum Of Contemporary Art, Modern Art Museum, Colombo Biennale, Kathmandu Triennial, Bronx Museum New York, Art Dubai, Bangladesh Art Week, India Art Fair, and Dhaka Art Summit. This exhibition not only showcases their immense talent but also their commitment to addressing critical global issues through art.
